About the South African Artist

Keneilwe Mokoena is a visual artist/curator/educator based in Johannesburg, and a Fine Art graduate from Tshwane University of Technology.

My work has been exhibited across Sourthern Africa including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape town, Eastern Cape, Swaziland, and internationally, including Brussels and Paris. I am the recipient of the Reinhold Cassirer award for 2015 and was in residence at the Bag Factory Artist Studio in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. I have curated several exhibitions in the Southern African region (including Maputo and Harare) for Capital Arts Revolution [an artist’s collective from Pretoria], and Social Life of Waste [S.L.O.W] Art – a network of artists, researchers, writers, gardeners and community developers working within the discourse of waste.

I’ve facilitated art workshops for Pretoria Art Museum, schools in association with Capital Arts Revolution and the American Embassy, and various other organizations including The Coloured Cube. My work mainly varies between multidisciplinary visual arts ; art curation, direction and facilitation. I formed part of theTalent Unlocked Artist Programme facilitated by Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) and Assemblage. I was chosen as a top 10 finalist for ‘Continuing Conversations – UJ portrait award 2018. A recent project I managed, ‘NUMBERS’ exhibition curated by myself- a collaborative multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring an interactive multimedia installation and a group show of selected female artists showed at Hazard Gallery, Johannesburg.

I was recently in an artist residency programme at Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art (SAFFCA) in Knysna, end of 2018. I’m was recently in the ‘Artists in Schools’education programme with Sibikwa Arts Centre, working as an art facilitator at Mogale primary school in 2019. I’m currently the director of The Project Space organisation since September 2019. Keneilwe launched her first solo exhibition ‘Deconstruction/Reconstruction’ in 2019 at The Project Space, and recently launched her 2nd solo exhibition ‘Untitled 1.0’ at Gallery Fanon in 2020.
