About the American Artist
Born in Kansas City, Missouri and is a current resident of Lenexa, Kansas, Catherine Kirkland is back full-time to visual arts in the form of fine art painting after a successful 35+ year career in advertising and publishing, as an award-winning art director, illustrator, graphic designer and production manager.
Before embarking on her professional art and design career, Catherine Kirkland was a Studio Art major at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she studied illustration, painting in oil and acrylic, ceramic and metal sculpture, as well as theater set design and film language. Through professional work and independent study, she also explored photography, digital media and film/video art direction and production. In 2011, she earned an interior design degree, expanding her knowledge of decorative arts and crafts.
While studying Interior Design, a class project rekindled her interest in painting and since then she has been painting and showing full time.
Her acrylic paintings are created on canvas or panel with brushes and unconventional tools. Her style has evolved from representational landscapes and figural works to vivid abstracts with thousands of applied colorful dots. Recent paintings explore both outer- and inner-spaces, with subjects as diverse as the vastness of an extraterrestrial nebula and the microscopic inter-cellular spaces of the human body. Other collections are comprised of mid-century inspired hard-edged abstracts expressed in a limited Zorn palette of muted earth tones and metallic paint.
Over the past 7 years, Catherine Kirkland has exhibited her works in numerous juried exhibitions in the Kansas City metro, as well as mounted solo exhibits in public spaces including the Lenexa City Hall Gallery, Lee’s Summit City Hall Gallery and the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center. In the fall of 2019, she was invited to install a large exhibit of her work in the Regional Gallery of the Spiva Arts Center in Joplin, Missouri. Most recently, a large collection of her work and prints was purchased and installed in The Lofts at City Center in Lenexa.
Catherine Kirkland’s influences include: world-renowned 20th century pointillist painter Vance Kirkland; contemporary painter David S. Parker; as well as mid-century artists such as Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin.
Mark Twain’s quote: “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.”
